Week 5 of Interaction Design for Web is complete. In week five we continued to develop a deeper understanding of HTML, CSS, Skeleton framework and creating mobile first designs. Our activity was to build a prototype website based on provided code. I also spent time this week developing the branding for Paper Dear.
I devoted a lot of time to the branding or logo of the Paper Dear website. I conducted research, visual inspiration and created prototypes. I eventually refined the design to a finished logo.
Concept Refinement
Title: Paper Dear
Website: http://paperdear.com
Purpose: Daily stationery inspiration, showcasing designer themed personal notebooks, cards, pens & paper from Australian and international artists.
Target Market: Female university students aged 20-25 & busy mums aged 35-44.
Branding
To continue the concept refinement, I focused on the branding of the website. Covering the ‘site identity’ or logo which would be used to identify ‘Paper Dear’. The process involved research, sketching, prototyping and refinement.
My initial considerations when creating the branding was that the site should not be confused with stationery stores. It’s important it is defined as a blog or inspiration gallery rather than a shop. A way to prevent this is to examine the difference between current websites with similar content and the branding of stationery stores.
Research (Similar Websites)
I began my research into branding by looking at 30 sites based on a similar concept. These included; A Penchant for Paper, All Things Stationery, Boho Berry, Cute Stationery, Love Notes, Lovely Planner, Lovely Stationery, Museum Of Notebooks, My Supply Room, No Pen Intended, Notebook Stories, Office Supply Geek, Oh So Beautiful Paper, Paper Crave, Paper Lovestory, Passion Themed Life, Plan Another Day, Productive & Pretty, Show Me Your Planner, Stationery Blogger, Stationery Overdose, Stationery Trends, The Bullet Journal Addict, The Gentleman Stationer, The Paper Chronicles, The Pen Addict, The Stationery Addict, Tiny Ray of Sunshine, We Love Stationery and Zen of Planning.
I discovered that 57% of websites use text & image branding. The most common typeface used was a sans serif (33%) in sentence case (30%). It was popular to use a combination of colours in the logo text (30%) and employ a white (47%) or transparent (37%) background.
Research (Stationery Stores)
I continued my research by looking at the branding on stationery stores. I thought that this was important so that I could see the distinction between stationery blogs and stationery shops.
I looked at 30 stationery stores, which included; Amelia Lane Paper, Cotton On, Crane & Co., Elli, EMMA SMITH EVENT STATIONERY, Fox and Star, Honest Paper, InkandCard, kikki.K, Lush Invitations Designer Stationery, MINTED LLC, Officeworks, Ohh Deer, Paper Bound Love, Paper Willow Stationery, Paperchase, Paperlust, Papier d’amour, Pepespaperie, Pepperpot, Poketo, Pulp Addiction, RIFLE PAPER Co., Scratch & Jotter, Smiggle, Specklefarm, Staples, SusieEsse, The Paper Store and Venecia Designs.
My research indicated that it was more common for stationery stores to have a text branding (53%) in a display typeface (37%). 33% of logos were in uppercase, followed by lowercase with 23%. It was common for branding to use a combination of colours (27%) with a transparent (40%) or white (33%) background.
Research (Analysis)
My research into the logos of similar sites (blogs) and stationery stores (shops) revealed that there were some differences and similarities.
Differences
- Blogs use text and image logo types while shops prefer text
- Blogs use sans serif typeface while shops use display
- Blogs use sentence case while shops use uppercase
Similarities
- Shops and blogs both use a combination of colours in logo
- Backgrounds of logo are either transparent or white
Inspiration (Revisited)
In week four I created several image boards that included colour, imagery and typography. I thought it was important to include these again, to get that inspiration going.
Inspiration (Logo Design)
For further inspiration, I looked at 30 logo designs which were related to stationery or had significant appeal through great typography and imagery.
Sketches
I created some sketches where I explored typographic styles as well as imagery that could potentially be included (such as pencils, paper, etc).
Digital Prototypes
I started the process of digital prototypes by using many typefaces to explore how they could portray ‘Paper Dear’. I continued this process by refining my selection and adding further elements.
Final
For the final logo, I selected the typeface Pacifico Regular for the website title and Patrick Hand SC for the description. Additional visual elements along with colour were added to enhance the appearance.
Typography
The website title uses the typeface Pacifico Regular with alterations to kerning and baseline shift of the capital D (in Dear) so that it matched the P (in Paper).
The website description uses the typeface Patrick Hand SC, which has broad tracking to fill the selected area spaciously. By allowing the extra space, it also draws a connection to the imagery included (polka dots).
Colour
I used three primary colours in the logo. These included; Monte Carlo #88cecb (Green/Blue), Wewak #f4abb1 (Pink) and Saffron Mango #f7bd57 (Yellow).
Imagery
I included small imagery of leaves and polka dots that are attached and around the website title. These reflect patterns found in stationery design.
Activity: Building A Prototype
In week five our activity was to create a prototype based on HTML and CSS provided. Our focus was to include further content on the page, using the Skeleton grid framework.
Decoding The Code
I began the process by creating a new folder for the prototype and adding the required HTML and CSS. I examined the structure of the code and how the CSS was styling each element. I could see that the main properties were the top and bottom menus with no content in between.
Quick Inspiration
To understand community centre websites I conducted quick visual research on similar sites. I found that community centres often had many upcoming events and were likely to be to support the local community.
Adding Content
In our example, HTML, the name of the site was a community centre. I decided to invent a pretend name and used an online generator to create a fake name (MillerVille Community Centre). I made sure that I used columns so that when viewed on larger screens the content could sit beside each other.
When adding content to the page, I ensured that each section* contained a new ‘section’, ‘container’ and ‘row’. Creating a new section would allow for these to be styled easily. The sections included; Header, Latest Events, About Us, Location, Contact and Footer. I also used Font Awesome and a Google Map.
In the example I used divs styled with a section class. I had considered using actual <header>, <section>, <nav> etc, however, I wanted to stick with the style of the example provided.
Styling
Now that I had some content in place it was time to style everything. I liked to work on each section first and move down.
The header in the example was using a fixed position. I found that I had trouble with the space between the fixed header and the content underneath. After several experiments, I decided to remove the fixed positioning. I wanted the header to include the title of the centre, description and navigation. I experimented with a gradient background and added a standard background colour for browsers which did not support it.
Latest events included three events that had been structured to include details about each event. These included the title, image, date and price. The events were broken across three columns with two buttons below with links to ‘view more events’ and ‘contact us’.
The About Us section featured text and placement text (Lorem ipsum) with the intention of providing more information about the centre. This was a heavy text section, and I used Font Awesome icons for quick visual reference to the three smaller columns on ‘Trust’, ‘Inspiration’ and ‘Assistance’.
Location included a fictitious address and Google map with a focus on New South Wales. To create the map I viewed instructions on how to insert a map and generated an API key. The map did require some js, with very limited editing (just the lat, lang and size).
For the contact section, the form styling was inherited from Skeleton and contact detail lists were displayed in block instead of inline.
Finally, the footer had a darker background to contrast the main content. The text was white so it was easy to read. Social icons were changed to background colours in the network hex.
Styling Refinement
To further refine the styling of the page I looked at small details and ways I could enhance features. I decided to use partly transparent .png textures for sections which added a subtle contrast between them. I added a new font for the h2 and h3 (adding Comfortaa from Google Fonts). I also added custom colours for social media Font Awesome icons (using the primary hex colour of each network).
Testing
I tested the design by continually changing the browser size, enabling me to see the design respond to varying widths. To make sure that I had structured the code correctly (I also did many visual checks too) I checked the HTML and CSS with validators. I found that for images I had added ‘alt””‘ instead of ‘alt=””‘.
I uploaded the design and continued to test the design with browser resizing, responsive checkers and a few browser checkers.
Conclusion
This activity was a great one to start to practice coding and explore different ways to achieve attractive effects. I can see that I could have improved the design visually by using two columns in the events and about because they can be very squashed on tablet/lap dimensions. That is the great thing about practice and prototypes, you develop and learn. 😃
