Digital Design Snail

Hooray, Digital Design Complete

6 years

I have completed my class on Digital Design, with the submission of my last assessment (hooray! πŸ’–). While I do not have my final grade yet, I am confident I passed. Digital Design was my fourth class towards my Bachelor of Design (Communication Design).

Digital Design involved learning to use Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop. While also developing a clear design process and ideation.

What was Digital Design about?

Digital Design was about using design software for two specific projects. Project 1 involved Adobe Illustrator, which required the design of three paper planes. It sounds easy enough (and I thought it would be simple at first). However, you have to consider how a flat 2D design translates into a 3D model. Project 2 included Adobe Photoshop and the creation of three splash screens. We were tasked to use original photographs and explore a range of editing techniques. Both projects focussed on the importance of the design process. From early sketches, notations, visual inspiration and documenting digital creations.

What did I learn in Digital Design?

In Project 1, I used my old friend, Adobe Illustrator. While I was familiar with many features of the program there are still many things to learn. I really liked the challenge of having to create a design that had specific measurements.

It was a combination of thinking creatively about the concept and logically about the application.

Project 2 was much more of a challenge. I wasn’t that confident using Photoshop and I had a lot to learn. I viewed a lot of tutorials, created many practice designs and tried to endure my own criticisms. In the end, I was proud of the designs I made. Once I was more confident using selection tools and layer masks, it became less of a chore and more of a journey.

Holiday Plans

Now that class finished (wooo) I have four weeks of holidays. I have plans to visit family in late February and will be staying right on the beach. Really looking forward to that! I am also going to continue scheming for my first tattoo. I will have a post about it, either before or after I get one… not sure yet. Of course, I am overthinking the whole thing and it kind of has it’s own design process (yes I am weird πŸ˜†).

P.S: I apologise that I have been unable to return comments in the last few weeks. I have just been really busy. I plan to visit and comment on a number of blogs in the next few days.

P.P.S: The featured image was part of a splash screen.

P.P.P.S (Is that a thing?): I recently watched the showΒ Santa Clarita Diet via Netflix. I thought it was hilarious. I do love a good zombie show and the mix of comedy and weirdly interesting characters was great.Β  πŸ™ƒ

πŸ’¬ Questions

  1. What do you like to do in your holidays?
  2. When was the last time you went to the beach?

  1. Congrats on finishing your class! I’m sure you did great! I used to be pretty well versed in photoshop, but have forgotten a lot, and never used illustrator, but I hear it’s a really good design programme.

For holidays, my favourite thing to do HAS to be taking time off to go to national and state parks and just spend time outdoors in quiet nature. It really helps to de-stress and decompress my brain. After heading to Ohio in a couple of weeks after we get unpacked I told hubby he’s taking me to Hocking Hills Park because they have some of the most beautiful landscapes that I’ve ever seen

The beach. Omg. I haven’t been to a beach since I was about 15…sooo 11 years ish. I don’t much like swimming, but I LOVE the sea-salt smell in the air. Not to mention my hair always looks surprisingly good there lol. I love beach areas as long as it’s not SUPER hot.

I’ve never seen that show, but it looks amusing. I believe I have it on my hulu watch list. Hubby is obsessed with this show called iZombie. I’ve watched a few episodes and some of it is amusing. =D

    1. Nature can be so amazing. πŸ˜€ Wow, it’s a long time since you were at the beach! I never usually swim in the ocean (I think I did once, but I didn’t like it much). I mainly like to see the water and feel it through my toes. I haven’t watched iZombie yet. UuU

  2. Hooray! Congrats on finishing your class on digital design! I love learning and it’s awesome you got to learn more about Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

And wow a four week holiday! I’m so jealous, haha. I also can’t wait to read about your post about your tattoo! I find your process really smart and not weird at all! I feel like for tattoos, it is better to overthink, rather than under think n’D

    1. You’re right. It is good to overthink a design that is going to be with you for a looooong time. Hopefully in the coming weeks or early March I can share much more. ou3uo

  3. congrats on the completion! πŸ˜€
i remember before i started university, i was all about photoshop and i didn’t know anything about illustrator. fast forward to now that i have graduated, i’m all about using illustrator and photoshop second (mainly for image editing though). illustrator is definitely ma fave!

holidays or not, i like to spend time at home. with my video games or do other things that i enjoy. i do like to go out but only with my special people (aka my best friend or my boyfriend). other than that, i’m a couch potato in my bunker at home πŸ˜›

i don’t remember the last time i went to the beach. i think it was years ago. i love the sea / ocean but i hate beaches because urgh, the sun the heat…i can’t take them! plus my eczema hates sunlight, especially during the afternoon. sunlight can trigger flare-ups and so, i avoid beaches at all cost.

i hope you enjoy your 4 weeks holiday πŸ˜€

    1. Thank you! πŸ˜€ Many moons ago, I used Photoshop to make LiveJournal icons. Which was mostly just using selective colours. It’s funny how some things change and other’s don’t. Illustrator is an awesome beast. πŸ˜€

  4. Well done on finishing your final assessment! I am looking forward to you having your break as well. πŸ™‚ I am sure you will enjoy the beach! The last time I went was in Perth a few weeks ago. But before that, ermmm I think it had definitely been some time. Perhaps a whole year back.

Wow I have never heard of the Santa Clarita Diet, I was surprised that it was not just like… some girly show about how to eat well. πŸ˜‚

I think that PPPPPPPS is totally a thing. At least I remember doing that in my high school years when I wrote letters to my friends. I am not sure what else would suffice, I was going to say an β€œafterword” or even footnotes might be more appropriate, but it doesn’t have the same feel to it. πŸ˜†

    1. The title of the show sounds so misleading. When I first read that I was like, hmm. But when I found out what it was about, it sounded so good. But I am partial to a good zombie movie/tv series. >p<

    1. Thank you. I am glad it’s finished, it’s nice to have some time to just relax. I usually reach a point in the holidays where I don’t know what to do with myself though. >D<

  5. Congratulations on completing your Digital Design class! I’m sure you did really well anyways ;). It’s great to see that you learned a lot from this class. Challenging yourself is always a good thing! Hope you’ll have fun during your vacation :).

There are different things I do when I’m on a holiday.. Biggest thing is to avoid stress when I can. The last time I went to a beach was a couple of years ago. I am not a fan of tans @___@.

  6. Congratulations on completing your class! I bet you did just fine.

I hope you enjoy your holiday! Four weeks!? Wow, what a long break. How nice would that be! Have fun at the beach and enjoy visiting your family. You’re going to have a great time!

I haven’t visited a beach, an actual beach, since I was about 10 years old when we traveled to Florida and went to the ocean for the day. So, what, twenty years ago? Yup, it’s been a long time.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Have fun on your holiday and enjoy the sense of accomplishment for completing your class. ^_^

  7. Congrats on finishing the class! I’m confident you will have passed. πŸ˜‰

I use Photoshop all the time but I’ve never used Illustrator. It’s something I would love to learn how to use though, and I think it’s great that you get to learn about such useful tools as a part of your course.

    1. Thank you. πŸ˜€ Knowing how to use the programs certainly can’t hurt! You never know when you need to whip up an image or manipulate images. ;D

  8. Congratulations on finishing your class. I am glad that you had a lot to learn and most important that you managed to create something you are content with.

I am sure your holiday will be very enjoyable. Relax, have fun, spend time with your loved ones because you totally deserve it <3

What do you like to do in your holidays?
I usually stay at home and binge watch TV Shows because I don't get to do that during the school year. Also I travel home to visit my family or go out. Nothing out of ordinary.

When was the last time you went to the beach?
Probably it has been too long, because I tried to much to remember. Almost two years ago. But this summer I plan on going. I need to relax as much as I can. <3

Have you watched Santa Clarita Diet?
    Unfortunatelly no u_u

  9. Congratulations, Penny! However, you did too much work and you should have slacked off like the rest of the students and I did.

In all seriousness, please become a teacher so that you can show them how it’s done!

You could travel to USA??? That would be very niceeeeee!

I want to get a tattoo, too. Maybe you could design me one? Kidding. haha.. or am I? :O

    1. Hahahah. I don’t think I could handle trying to design a tattoo for someone else… too much pressure and what if it was wrong. owo

  10. Congratulations on completing your course! Seeing that your sample designs on here are eye-catching, I’m confident you’ll get an A+++++ πŸ˜‰

My boyfriend and I watched Santa Clarita Diet the day it was released. We watched within a day. I was bummed that the first season was short, BUT it was worth the laugh. ;D

  11. Congrats on completing your class! <3 It's always a good thing to finish something you start. I heard of the movie, but have zero interests to see it, and saw Lego Batman instead. SO much better.

Haven't been to a beach since 8 years ago, and I like to chill on my holidays depending on what I did before it or visit family, as it depends on the holiday, too.

  12. Congrats on finishing your course! I don’t know much about it but at least you have can now get a few weeks rest! Enjoy your holidays and throw away all the stress! I wish I could go for a holiday again and I’ll take all the sleep I need! haha

  13. Congrats on finishing your class! It sounds like you got a lot out of it and it proved to be a bit of a challenge, which is always good so you can grow and learn!

Enjoy your time off! Being at the beach sounds like a perfect way to celebrate and just relax after the hard work you’ve put in for your studies. My family would go to the beach every summer for our family vacations, so we went just last year. I love being able to unwind and just lazy around in the sun and sand. My perfect holiday!

Are you designing your own tattoo? I’m sure it will turn out great, so I’m excited to see what you will get!

    1. Thank you! I will certainly enjoy my time off. My next class is supposed to be quite a busy and detailed one, so I am making the most of my time. ;D

I am designing my own tattoo. It’s a bit stressful trying to create a design that will be with you for a long time. I want to make sure I get it right. >D<

  14. Congratulations on finishing the digital design class. I just started an Graphic Design class intro. Haha.

I have Santa Clarita Diet on my list in Netflix per recommendation of my friend. He said it was funny but sometimes gross.

    1. Good luck with your class. I hope it will be really interesting.

It is a show about zombies, so there are certainly a lot of parts that are rather gory. If you don’t like that kind of thing it probably won’t be your kind of show.

  15. Congrats on completing this! I never expected design to pertain to so much technical stuff, so your posts have been an eye-opener in that respect. πŸ™Š

I’ve not watched the movie, but will make note…although I don’t really do zombies. 😳πŸ˜₯

    1. Thanks! It’s always interesting to learn more about something you might not have known about before. πŸ˜€

If you don’t do zombies, it’s probably not something you would like. :’D

  16. Congrats on completing your class! I’m getting ready to finish mine as well, and of course, not thinking about having a break. XD;

I haven’t been to a beach in years! We don’t have them in Arizona, but I grew up in NY so I used to go a lot. We have lakes, but it’s not really the same. I have been to California a couple of time, but it’s been a while. πŸ™

When I’m on a break, I love to travel to the mountains! πŸ˜€

    1. Good luck with your class! πŸ˜€ Mountains would be so cool to see. I live in an area that has a lot of hills. I would love to see snow capped mountains though.

  17. Congratulations on completing the course! Looks like you learned a lot and enjoyed yourself. It sounds fun but at the same time very technical!

A four-week vacation is wonderful! Enjoy! You deserve it after a productive time in school!

During my holidays I just like to catch up on sleep, play games, or read because these are things I don’t get to do a lot during the semester. My friends like to go to the beach during vacations but I tan very easily so I don’t go to the beach often – the last time I went to the beach (October last year) it was raining, which was perfect for me because I didn’t tan at all. Lol!

  18. Yay for finishing up your class! I love that feeling when you’re done for the term/semester. πŸ˜€ I know you passed — you work much too hard to not pass with a good grade <3

Enjoy your four-week holiday! I miss having those school holidays. I have a day trip tomorrow to a city in the eastern part of Korea for an ice skating championship and I have a trip to visit Japan in April! The last time I visited a beach was when I visited Sokcho back in November.

Hope to see your posts about your vacay soon! πŸ˜€

  19. Congrats on finishing your class! It sounds very efficient to teach you how to use tools to do your design! A nice course to really give you insight into the design process! I took only one digital design class that taught us the process of it, the rest of my university education I had to kind of learn by myself. But design is better done on your own, I think! Allows you to think creatively or learn to solve problems.
