Week 8 of Design Studio: Typography is complete.
In week eight I spent a lot of time researching for Project 4, on my allocated decade of the 1960s. I have been trying to gather enough material, as well as a developed understanding of the typefaces, designers and technology of the time. I have found it very helpful to also read many books about typography that provide more information and depth on the subject. So far I have read; Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton, Typographic Design: Form and Communication by Rob Carter and Making and Breaking the Grid: A Graphic Design Layout Workshop by Timothy Samara. Which have all been fantastic resources. Thankfully these were available in eBook format, so I was able to access them easily.
My focus area for Project 4, will be the following:
- Typeface: Helvetica
- Typographic Technology: Phototypesetting with CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)
- Typographer: Wim Crouwel
Next week will be a busy one, with writing and submitting for approval the copy and images that I will use, as well as sketches and digital mockup. I am looking forward to the challenge.
