Room Renovation: Phase One

8 years

I am currently in the process of renovating my bedroom and giving it a fresh new look. My goal is to have everything finished before University starts again in November.

Phase one has been taking out all the furniture and sanding the floor. For some strange reason the last time that I updated the look of my bedroom I decided to paint the floor white. Not only that I decided to paint the floor very thick. That was okay, until it came time to actually sanding it and the amount of time and effort that is involved in removing it.  ๐Ÿ˜ก

Removing the paint from the floor has not been an easy task and still one I am battling on with. It requires using a belt sander for the main areas on the floor and using a paint scraper near the walls or skirting. The belt sander has been starting to overheat a lot, so I find I can only do a small space (less then half a board) before having to let it cool.

Here are some pictures so far. Keep in mind I have been sanding, so itโ€™s very dusty.

Once phase one is complete, I will then stain the floor boards wait for it to dry and lacquer them. That would take two – four days with drying time. Then I can move onto repainting the walls and setting up the furniture!

Here is a room I created in the Sims 4, that is kind of similar to the style I am going for. However my wardrobe, bed, rug, bookcase and a number of other things will be different, but I thought it was fun to make. ๐Ÿ˜€

  1. Hi.. Glad to be here in your blog..

That looks like a whole of task to do. ๐Ÿ™ I like the layout of your SIMS room. The study area is just genius.

The last time I did my room was probably about 4 years ago. I painted my room gray with black trims. We will be moving to a new apartment next month. Apartments in our area here in Germany are ridiculously tiny. Lol. We really can’t do a lot. I’m planning to have a Scandinavian look with the bed on the floor without box to save space.

Hope you’ll get your room done in no time. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Looks like you’re off to a great start! I can’t do much with my space, because I live in an apartment. However, we have some really nice pieces in there, and throughout the house. I like modern and classic mixed together. Good luck, you’re very organized! ๐Ÿ˜€

  3. Ooh, how exciting! I wish I could be active enough to do up my room. I’ve lived here for just over a year but haven’t done much except buy some new bedside lamps and that is about it.

I’d love to do an overhaul and see what I could make of it, one day ๐Ÿ™‚

The sanded sections of floor look great, I’m sure they’ll look even better once you’re finished with them.

I also love that you used the sims to do a mock up ๐Ÿ˜€ Very cool ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Wow, that looks like a lot of work! Good job though ๐Ÿ™‚
We are in the process of packing up our apartment because we’ll be moving in a month so I need to paint this whole apartment ๐Ÿ™ Oh well.

  5. That looks like such hard work & effort! It looks like it’ll look gorgeous and very neat at the end of the day! I really like how your desk is away from everything else, it’s given me an idea to do that with my room next time I redecorate!

    1. How do you have your bedroom setup? I basically have my bed in the middle of my room and a large glass door that covers half the room, it’s my mirror and behind it is my excessively large wardrobe, dresser and TV with my gaming consoles!

    2. When was the last time you renovated or updated? Like 6 months ago!

    3. Do you have a design trend or style you like? I really like yours ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. I am lucky in that when the house was built, they made a section that is really good for a desk to be positioned. Now I can just make it pretty. ๐Ÿ˜€

  6. Wow, I’ve never sanded floor boards before, but that looks like a lot of work! That’s very cool that you’re doing this all on your own. I like the plan you created in Sims 4. Good luck with it, and I can’t wait to see the finished result!

I actually don’t spend much time in my bedroom, so it’s very plain. I end up decorating my sewing room and our game room instead, since that’s where I am most of the of time ๐Ÿ™‚ I like the simple and modern styles!

  7. Right now, my bedroom is going through a transition, like Halloween decorations transition. I’ll probably post up a pictures of my bedroom later when it gets finished, plus there are little things that need taking care of. You’re sanding? Whoa~ that’s pretty cool.

I hope your room turns out great. ๐Ÿ˜€

  8. Hurray for giving your room a fresh look! It’s always good to renovate, to give yourself a newish atmosphere. At least you could still sand the paint off the floor! It sounds like you’ve done great progress and your new room will look awesome! And Kitdung looks adorable too :3.

Your closet will look similar to a locker, or is it just the general framework? Your desk area looks great because it gives you a chance to have some peace.

My bedroom setup at home is whatevers, nothing special. At school, I “strategically” planned out how to arrange the furniture to give the most space in the middle, which worked out until we became lazy and left all sorts of stuff on the floor XD. I think I like the minimal trend; I have so much stuff on my shelves that there are dust everywhere!

    1. The lockers was just a kind of placeholder. I couldn’t find any kind of wardrobe that resembled the one I had in length. I have just a basic white one, that I hope will fit in well. ๐Ÿ˜€

  9. It’s nice to give a room an update look. When I was living in a house, I had white walls in my bedroom. My bed was by the window. I had dressers and a shelf against the wall. I had a desk by my bedroom door. Later on, I changed things around my room. I painted the walls sky blue. I got rid of the desk. I moved my bed by the door. When you walked in the bedroom, the pathway looks like an upside down u shape.

    1. How do you have your bedroom setup? I have a bed against the wall, random stuff in the corner, and dresser by the bedroom door and lanai door.
    2. When was the last time you renovated or updated? Long time ago, I added ceiling fans to the living room and bedroom.
    3. Do you have a design trend or style you like? Yes, I like certain type of patterns.

  10. We sanded some of our corkboard (!!) floor at home when we wanted to re-lacquer it. It was such a hassle moving the furniture around because we did not have a space to put it all in the interim.

Itโ€™s nice to see you renovating though, I wish I could do that to my room but at the same time I think it would be too much work for me to handle. I have crappy carpet and I want to at least get it shampooed. :/ Haha.

I should probably try using The Sims to plan my own room or something, haha. I never got past making my character because I spent too much time doing that and got bored. :X XD

    1. How do you have your bedroom setup?
I just have carpet, a bed in the corner with a side table, and on the other side of the room I have a tall bookshelf, a chest of drawers with a record player, a desk with a monitor on it (I usually plug my laptop in), and a clothes rack. Thereโ€™s also another shelf and rack which my parents use sometimes. I donโ€™t have a lot of freedom with my room.

    2. When was the last time you renovated or updated?
I have never renovated my room, but I got a double bed instead of a single bed about six months ago so that Nick could stay over. I had to move a lot of furniture for that. However I am constantly cleaning up and getting rid of anything I donโ€™t need. ๐Ÿ˜€

    3. Do you have a design trend or style you like?
I like minimal, clean, crisp designs. Really simple, and not too many bright colours either. Though a pop of colour from cushions or lamps is nice. I like white and neutral colours. Unfortunately this is only a dream as I have not been able to do it with my room. XD

  11. How exciting! ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m looking forward to seeing the room when it’s finished!

It’s also so cool how you plotted everything out in Sims 4. ๐Ÿ˜€

  12. Wow, I am actually really surprised you are doing so much by yourself? I am well-skilled in a few things, but it’s really awesome that you are able to reform your room completely by yourself and master it in a way I could ever imagine. Like I wouldn’t even know where to begin! But for the questions you asked, my bedroom is set basically like yours: a nice comfy bed, a wardrobe, a desk for study but instead of a tv I have a huge bookcase. I think I will update my room soon, mainly because the walls are the same colour I chose when I was five, so if this isn’t a sign I should change i don’t know what is! And lately I’ve been organizing my stuff using minimalism lifestyle. Less is more and leave my room and my mind uncluttered.
    3. Do you have a design trend or style you like?

  13. Looking good! Hard work, but it’ll be worth it in the end ๐Ÿ˜€ I’m looking forward to seeing your SIMS 4 room in reality ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. It was a long time ago since we did some renovations at our home. We got new things when we moved in here in December 1999. But after that it has stood still. Sometimes I dream that we could move and find something new. Hope that it goes well for you with the renovation and you get it done as you like. It is looking good!

  15. Thanks for visiting my blog XD Yeah, I really hope every thing will go smoothly XD I really need to brush up my skills in taking night-photos. It’s always hard to do the settings and what not~

Anyway, omg, renovation takes a LONG time, but at the end of the day, every thing will be paid off when you see the design and setting in your head are now coming true. I just read a blog about reorganising your room just now (i forgot which blog lol) and now with your post, I felt the obligation to so something with my messy room hahaha XD Can’t wait to see your room fully renovated and decorated!

  16. Good luck with your room renovation! I’m currently renting my house, so I can’t actually renovate it. The styles I usually go for are simple, clean and yet functional. I don’t like clutter, so most of the decoration I have are actually things I can use (i.e., purses on display).

    1. That would make it harder when renting. I love the idea of organised items that also have a display value as well, like handbags, jewellery. ๐Ÿ˜€

  17. Can’t wait to see the finished product! I think it’s a great idea how you even made up a visual of what your room to look like. And I bet the finished product will be a lot more satisfying as well, since you were there every step of the way.

    1. Yeah, you’re right. Doing all of the work myself and going through the different phases, I should be hopefully proud of where I end up in the end. Hopefully haha.

  18. I love the idea of designing a room in Sims to get an idea of what it would look like in real life! The sanding sounds like hard work but it looks like it’s paying off.

We had a move around in our flat just last week. We can’t renovate because we rent, so we just have to be imaginative with how we place our stuff.

    1. It would be difficult when renting to try and style a place. Hopefully you can get it so you are happy with everything. ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. YIKE. That sounds like so much work! Kudos to you for tackling it! I can’t “renovate” my room like you because we live in a rented apartment. But if I could change things, I’d definitely move around my furnitures and actually have my windows not be blocked by my piano and DVD cabinet LOL.

    1. That would be handy! xD I often move around the furniture in my room, I don’t think I have ever had a ‘fixed’ position for anything.

  20. Woah, this is a lot of effort but great job so far! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I would like to do this too but I don’t even know where my stuff should go. LOL!

    1. How do you have your bedroom setup?
    – Most of the stuff in my room were already there when it was constructed (such as the dresser and the closets), so I can’t replace them. I do have a study/computer desk for my huge iMac, a shelf for my books and growing music collection, and bag hooks to maximize space. I have a queen sized bed at the center and that’s it. I don’t have a lot of freedom in designing or furnishing it because of my room’s layout (more windows instead of walls, small space, etc)

    2. When was the last time you renovated or updated?
    – I’ve never renovated my room before, but I did replace my old study desk (which I outgrew) for a new one which feels more “grownup” ๐Ÿ˜›

    3. Do you have a design trend or style you like?
    – I don’t really have a style, but I love wooden furniture. As for colors, I like neutral ones but I’m kinda biased towards white (I have lots of white in my room) ๐Ÿ˜€

  21. You’re doing a great job! You definitely know what you’re doing and I love seeing a woman doing things that, even though they shouldn’t be, are considered unconventional for them to do. It’s uplifting! I’m kind of laughing to myself because my first thought was “what?? You get to customize your room?!” That’s such a nice liberty to have, especially when you’re at a second home.

I’m not too well versed on decor, but I love to fill my windowsills with trinkets; crystals, shells, heck even cool sticks me or my daughter have found. I think it’s sweet to have some kind of sun catcher, too. And art, lots of it. The best part is putting up your own, if you have it. Reminders of where you’ve been and where you’re going.

I like to have a cute bowl of fresh fruit laying around, too. It’s all about the color ^~^ But if you were to come to my house it’s pretty barren otherwise. Furniture is so expensive @-@

Good luck with the remodeling, can’t wait to see the finished product!!

    1. Thank you so much. At first I was a bit scared about using power tools and had some thoughts of “I can’t do this” but I could and I did. Once you become a bit more familiar with how they work and do take precautions you can get there. ๐Ÿ˜€

That is such a magical idea to have windowsills with trinkets you collect, it would be so special. ๐Ÿ˜€

  22. Creating a room in Sims is actually a great idea! I create houses for my characters and actually plan on creating a house in Sims 3 to resemble my apartment (you know, when I get to that point in my life…).

I love the way your desk is set up and how you have that space to have it like that—it’s like having an office right in your room, without having to put up doors, etc. Depending on the space, I’d probably set up curtains to block it off, if only so I could have extra privacy/feel like I was alone… Idunno. I like being alone. ๐Ÿ˜ก

I feel like a lot of people are rearranging everything around this time. It feels almost as if I should get in on it, but there isn’t much I can do in terms of remodeling my room, seeing as this isn’t explicitly my space. With that said, I don’t have much of a trend or anything to follow/focus on, but I do have ideas for when I rent an apartment.
