Hey 2023

Hey 2023

2022 was a relatively quiet year. I finished a few classes, spent time with people I care about and dabbled in a few creative things.

The majority of my year was devoted to Uni. I completed Materials & Image Development which allowed me to spend a lot of time improving my traditional art skills. Design For Communication was another great class where I had fun creating designs for print and web. I am currently completing Photomedia Studio, which has been an exciting examination of context and meaning within photography.

Something I discovered in 2022 was that I would sometimes place an enormous amount of pressure on myself to complete projects. The pressure created anxiety, and the tension made what should be a fun and creative task into a kind of chore. I think part of that problem was the high expectations I would set for myself. I wanted to create many designs for Cute Magic, add a bundle of illustrations on Creative Market, create more Scanograms, capture the world through photographs and complete another children’s book (and probably many other little things). In the end, I didn’t finish many of these things. If I could have taken the pressure away, I think it might have been much healthier, and I could have approached it completely differently. Acknowledging it was a light-bulb moment, and I realised that I should create designs and photographs because I want to and because I am inspired to do so, not because I have to.

I look forward to taking this approach into 2023 and spending time on the projects I feel called to do.

  1. I know how that can feel. I tend to put way too much pressure on myself for stuff…which makes me completely dread doing it and takes the fun out of it. I hope in that regard this year is better for you.

  2. It sounds like you’ve had a busy year creatively! I’ve set some goals for this year as well, so here’s hoping we both accomplish what we set out to do! I love the beginning of a new year, reflecting back on the previous year and looking forward to what’s to come. The feeling of a fresh start is a nice one. 🙂
