Practising Character Sketches

Practising Character Sketches

5 years

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed that I have been sharing a lot of sketches lately. While I am battling the summer heat (eh ☀️😣) and found it too hot to work in my room, I have been sitting under the air conditioner practising character sketches. 🎨

I have never been confident with traditional art forms. Like any skill, you have to practice and experiment with different styles and mediums.

With my recent encounter with art-block in creating digital illustrations for my latest book, I thought I would take Mia’s advice and try something different. While my sketches are not related to my book, they have been a fantastic creative exercise.

“I like to experiment with a different medium, like try to do one of your illustrations in a medium you don’t normally use, watercolors, oil, vinyl, just doodle with pencil on a tiny piece of paper, color with scraps… try to get creative in a different way.” – Mia

They’re not perfect, and that’s okay! 😁

  1. Yay! I’m glad that helped a little bit… you see that you keep creating and that will get you back on your groove.
I loooove your sketches, i like the personality you infuse through the hair!
    Keep ’em coming!!

  2. I love what Mia said, it’s great to do what you do but using a different medium. I used to paint, but due to the move and still trying to get settled in (and a creative space put together) I’ve been forced to do little doodles on our calendar and in chalk. Creative juices still flow and you’re still making pretty things. Your sketches are great!

  3. I really really like your art style! The lips are different and are drawing me in.

I just followed you on Instagram so I can see more of your art. 🙂

  4. I love your character sketches! The little dash of colour you’ve added looks great!

I used to draw all the time but I lost confidence with it and gave up. I always felt pressured to create something perfect, even though I wasn’t nearly experienced enough for that. Mia’s idea to try different mediums is great though, and I love the idea of having fun with different styles.

    Hope you’re enjoying it!

  5. I actually really like what I’ve seen so far of your sketches on Instagram. They are simple, compared to other kinds of art, but yours look so bold and still have personality. I suspect I am not good at character sketches because I can’t draw people realistically, but maybe I need to have a go trying another medium and get a style happening, much like you have! 🙂

  6. I love your sketches and your style!

I’ve been drawing at work lately but mostly just copying cartoon characters like Spongebob and Connie the Hormone Monstress from Big Mouth 😅 It’s nice to try something different creatively. My friend even got me some drawing pens for Christmas!

  7. These are really sweet. They remind me of the chic doodles I used to see on the beauty box I received a few years ago… I was obsessed with those <3

  8. Wow, these are really good! Sometimes it really helps to try different things, just to keep those creative juices flowing. It doesn’t matter if they’re sometimes not related to your work, being creative like this once in a while will definitely help prevent burnout <3

I love the whole look of the sketches. Your style is simple but the output packs a lot of punch in terms of personality. I especially loooove the lips!!! 😉 Unfortuantely I can't draw at all and have no talent whatsoever in arts, but I do appreciate great art! 🙂

  9. Drawing is not my thing, but I totally get writer’s block, so I may have to take Mia’s advice and do something differently next time to get inspiration :3

I like these sketches! They are cute :3 I’m glad it’s been drawing you out of your art block!

  10. Pretty cool that you’ve been doing some neat character sketches lately! I really like the style you use whenever you create your gorgeous artwork. I’m always a paper and pen type of person but bought a tablet last year (but haven’t really used it). Hope you’ll conquer your art block!

  11. That’s a good idea to take a break and try things in a different medium! I like the style that you’ve done these sketches in. I’m really liking watercolor right now, but my favorite medium is probably still just a good ol’ pencil 🙂

  12. I love doing character sketches! They’re so awkward at first but the more you do them the more your skills develop and it’s just really fun comparing characters I draw now to characters I drew a year ago. I’m glad switching it up is helping you feel inspired and motivated!

My current favorite medium is alcohol markers, but I’m really itching to try my hand at digital art. I just feel like I can’t do it unless I get one where you can actually draw on the screen because I’ve tried a plug-in tablet thingy and I was just hopeless with it.

Oh, and favorite artists? I have a lot but the one I’m loving the most/ feeling inspired by right now is Danica Sills. She has a YouTube channel I’m subscribed to and love! 🙂
